Patrick Henry didn’t say “Give me Democracy or give me death’ in that Virginia church in 1775. In 1776 Thomas Jefferson did not write that “All men are created equal, and are endowed by certain inalienable rights, among these the Pursuit of Life, Democracy and Happiness.

And in 1841 Verdi did not write his Hebrew’s Slave Chorus to worship “Democracy”.

These lyrics are as poignant as you will find to define this 2022 and 2024 election

If you don’t know Nana Mouskouri, she is Greek, still alive, and sings in several languages, and I first heard her over 50 years ago. I like her French version better, but the English lyrics are more timely and poignant.
