2020 election, Conservatism, Dona;ld Trump, Elitism and Class

Daily Poke, Oct 10: A note on Our Side’s Second Guessers

You probably already know there are a few Keith Olbermann-types on the pro-Trump, Make America Great side of the ledger.

But Yes, there is a difference; a big, big difference.

You know Olbermann, he virtually disappeared in the national eye after the election of Donald Trump in 2016. Only this past week did he quit ESPN a third time to “serve my country in defeating Donald Trump”. I confess, that’s the first time I’ve ever heard him use “my country” in a sentence that could even be remotely be construed to be patriotic. In the past Olbermann’s only patriotism seemed to be toward his own self-appointed aristocratic class; often reduced to an aristocracy-of-one.

Of course he may have said “my country” in other public things, I’ve just not heard about them. But Keith Olbermann really is inconsequential in the Grand Game. But his grandiose opinion of himself can serve as an object lesson for some of our side, who can do far more harm to our cause than Olbermann ever could.

You see, the only thing Keith Olbermann could do to depress his audience would be to stand before then, but rather than ridicule Americans with his copyright-protected wild-eyes https://twitter.com/i/status/1314660689005477894, as he does here

he could instead tell his viewers tearfully that “he loves America”.

Of course Keith won’t do that, because all he would do to his faithful would throw them into confusion, causing them to retreat into their basement and assume the pre-natal position, sucking their thumbs.

This rant is all Olbermann has, his only card. It does his cause no good, and does our cause no harm.

But our Patriot-side has its own glory-seekers, who, while loving America instead of hating it, still see America as a reflection of their image of themselves and their self-importance. While most people are out drumming up new voters by getting the MAGA word out and making clever arguments about the evil intentions of our Enemy, many of these meists are complaining that the Trump isn’t taking their advice. You might call this grousing.

This behavior is much older than Trump. Since the rise of the internet and blogposts I’ve seen people who were so insistent about being right that I accused some of preferring our side to lose, if, by winning, it would prove them wrong. No, really, they would prefer America to lose than to win by a prescription they were against. Remember LTC Ralph Peters at Fox? Of course, during the Obama years the true intentions of Left were largely hidden beneath the surface, and it was easy for the Rather-be-Right-than-Red crowd to assume this back-and-forth could go on forever with no real price to pay. But once Donald Trump arrived center-stage that large “there-will-always-be-a-tomorrow” world in the American right had to make serious choices about whether they’d prefer to lick the boots of new masters, or actually put real skin in the game by joining the hoi-polloi who actually believe all that “we hold these truths to be self-evident” pablum.

I’m thinking of the elflings at National Review here, e.g., Jonah Goldberg, and some of his buddies at “National Review”, and his pal Stephen Hayes at “Weekly Standard” or even god-father Bill Kristol, all of whom still seem to believe there will be place for them in the inner circles of American political thinking once Donald Trump and any meaningful role for the common American voter have finally been dispatched.

(This is what happens, BTW, when you take the “People” out of “We the….”….An incomplete sentence.)

We are less than 30 days from that moment of truth when ALL will be decided. So, for the love of God, and America, please just go to your basement and sulk. Mike. There’s only a few hundred of you, but from the size of your Followers on Twitter, there can be hundreds of thousands who read you’re poor-mouthing that can be dispirited and not vote, all because Barr and Durham wouldn’t bring timely indictments in accordance with your prescriptions. If you’re right and I’m wrong, Mr Cernovich, I’ll be happy to admit it. But in February.

We have far more important things to attend to right now.

So, please just quietly step out of the goddam way the next three weeks, and let the people with not just skin in the game, but skin to lose, go about the business of getting this man across the finish line.
